On this day in 1914, the first ever Australian military aircraft was despatched to war during the initial conflicts of WWI. Australian aircrafts known as 'The Australian Flying Corps' and their crews left to form the 'Mesopotamian Half Flight', fighting in what is now known as Iraq.

The Australian Government was asked to provide aircraft, airmen, and transport to support the Anglo-Indian forces assigned to the campaign, alongside the British.

A monumental day in Australian war history and an insight into the origins of the formation of the Royal Australian Air Force.
