Victorians Return to Melbourne for ANZAC Day Commemorations

Tens of thousands of people joined today’s Anzac Day Dawn Service at the Shrine in an expression of mass gratitude for the men and women of the Australian and New Zealand Defence Forces.
The strong public support is attributed to the public’s enduring commitment to honour the service and sacrifice of generations of Victorians, and all those who suffer the consequences of war. Remembrance for the fallen holds fresh meaning as world events remind us of the importance, and human cost, of preserving peace.
This year’s Dawn Service Address was delivered by Her Excellency the Honourable Linda Dessau AC, the Governor of Victoria. The Ode was recited by Dr Robert Webster OAM, State President of RSL Victoria.
“RSL Victoria is proud to lead commemoration on ANZAC Day. It was wonderful to see so many Victorians commemorating at the Melbourne Dawn service this year.”
RSL VICTORIA STATE PRESIDENT, DR ROBERT WEBSTER OAM
“This is the first time in three years that we have been able to come together as we traditionally would. I thank Victorians for keeping alive the ANZAC messages of mateship, respect and camaraderie, and ensuring that these messages continue to be heard across our State.”
DR ROBERT WEBSTER OAM
“Providing a place for peaceful reflection and sharing the stories of those who suffer the consequences of war is as relevant today as it was when the Shrine opened in 1934.”
CEO OF THE SHRINE OF REMEMBRANCE, MR DEAN LEE
“The commitment of Victorians to honour those whose service and sacrifice contributed so much to our nation, is humbling”

RSL Victoria
First established in 1916, RSL Victoria’s primary objectives are to provide support to veterans and their families, acknowledge Australian Defence Force service and perpetuate its patriotic duty whilst encouraging conversation and mateship between those who have served and their communities. A crucial role of the RSL is also to appropriately commemorate those who have suffered and died in service of our nation or its allies.
