RSL Victoria welcomes the commencement of the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide (The Royal Commission) in Brisbane today.
The Royal Commission is a significant opportunity to address the devasting impact of Defence and Veteran suicide in Australia.
RSL Victoria’s State President, Dr Robert Webster OAM said, “Every suicide is a tragedy, with a ripple effect that leaves families and communities with the most tremendous loss.”
“It is essential that this Royal Commission makes recommendations that reduce the risk of suicide, provide timely and appropriate assistance to veterans and smooth the transition into civilian life. The recommendations need to be quickly and effectively implemented,” Dr Webster said.
The Royal Commission will begin with a Ceremonial Hearing in Brisbane at 10 am on Friday November 26 and public hearings will commence on Monday 29 November.
After extensive consultation with members, RSL Victoria has contributed to the RSL Australia’s submission to the Royal Commission. The submission identifies key areas for action including governance arrangements, legislative change, resourcing and funding, along with targeted mental health programs.

A crucial role of the RSL is also to appropriately commemorate those who have suffered and died in service of our nation or its allies.
