Statement on Newport RSL Sub-Branch

October 3, 2025

Earlier today RSL Victoria took action to suspend the charter of the Newport RSL Sub-Branch due to ongoing governance concerns.

The primary concerns are around management of the Sub-Branch, lack of transparency and accountability to its members and the proposed building works on the Sub-Branch site.

RSL Victoria has taken this difficult decision after seeking assurances from the Sub-Branch Committee for more than 12 months that it would improve poor governance practices. This was highlighted by serious concerns about the feasibility of the stalled building works.

In the meantime, RSL Victoria will be working through next steps with stakeholders, including the State Government who had provided multiple grants to the Sub-Branch supporting parts of the proposed building works.

The Newport RSL Sub-Branch Committee were informed of the decision this morning.

The suspension is for 12 months while the ongoing governance concerns are worked through with the Sub-Branch and relevant stakeholders.

The Sub-Branch site has been closed since June 2023 due to commencement of works by the Sub-Branch, which subsequently led to a building stop work order being issued in August 2024. RSL Victoria will take reasonable steps to secure the Sub-Branch site.

“Decisions like this are never easy, however the efforts of the RSL must be focused on supporting veterans and their families,” said RSL Victoria President Dr Mark Schröffel.

“There are a number of active Sub-Branches in the local area who are ready to step in and assist local veteran and families.”

“To hold an RSL charter is an honour and privilege that comes with responsibilities of good governance, transparency, and accountability together with demonstrated support for local veterans and their families.”

“RSL Victoria has been in contact with all relevant government stakeholders on these issues over the last 12 months, leading to this decision.”

RSL Victoria has confirmed that the nearby Altona and Sunshine Sub-Branches are available to provide support to veterans and their families in the region.
