Why I volunteer: Ricky’s story

Ricky served in the Royal Australian Navy for over 30 years. After his service, Ricky found himself feeling isolated, flat, and disconnected from his community.

When an RSL Victoria Wellbeing Advocate checked in on him, it sparked a turning point. RSL Victoria assisted Ricky with relocating back to the Frankston area, bringing him closer to his children, grandchildren, and his old Navy mates.

Through the Frankston RSL Sub-Branch, Ricky connected with a veterans’ group and began volunteering his time to support elderly veterans at Vasey RSL Frankston. Today, Ricky helps his community navigate their own transitions through exercise, coffee catch-ups, and advocating for support.

Volunteering didn’t just allow Ricky to help others: it helped him rediscover his community and his purpose.
