Our Community Buglers

November 11, 2024

Father and son, Richard and Aaron Loo have once again volunteered their time to play the Last Post and Rouse at 11:00am on Remembrance Day.

Every year, volunteer buglers take their places on prominent street corners around Melbourne’s city centre to mark this important moment in our calendar with these distinctive tunes.

Over the last few years, performers have come from Oakleigh Brass Band, Mordialloc Jazz Orchestra and Stonnington City Brass (SCB).

Richard and his 17-year-old son Aaron are both members of SCB, a community brass band that performs at events throughout the year, including various commemorative services.

Richard said it’s an honour to help Melbourne pause and remember.

“It’s important for me to use the skills and talents that I’ve been given to help people remember and remind people that some gave the ultimate sacrifice to give us what we’ve got today.”

His son Aaron said it’s hard to imagine Remembrance Day without the notes of the Last Post playing.

“It’s important. Hearing the Last Post reminds people to have a break and remember those who gave their lives.”

SCB has a history of Music Directors from the Army, Navy and Air Force, and is currently led by Kevin Hillier, a former Royal Australian Navy Band Music Director and President of the Frankston RSL Sub-Branch.
