Update: Royal Commission in to Defense and Veteran Suicide

RSL Victoria is developing a clear advocacy stance on the Government’s response to the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide, ensuring all political parties prioritise veteran welfare ahead of the 2025 Federal Election. We urge our network to support the rapid implementation of key recommendations that will make a real difference.
Where the Government stands
- 122 recommendations made
- 104 recommendations agreed or agreed in principle
- 17 recommendations still under review
- 1 recommendation rejected
Why these recommendations matter
RSL Victoria sees firsthand the impact of policy gaps on veterans and their families. The Royal Commission’s recommendations are not theoretical; they are essential for meaningful change.
While all recommendations are important, immediate action is critical on these five high-priority areas, which remain stuck at the ‘agree in principle’ stage:
- Transition support (Recommendation 81): A structured wellbeing program is needed to help veterans navigate the challenges of leaving service.
- Veteran wellbeing agency (Recommendation 87): A dedicated body would provide long-term, coordinated support rather than fragmented assistance.
- National funding agreement (Recommendation 88): Targeted funding could reduce disproportionate homelessness and incarceration rates among veterans.
- Professional compensation advocacy (Recommendation 99): Properly funded, paid advocates would ease the stress of navigating complex claims.
The rejected recommendation
The Government has not supported Recommendation 90(a), which would remove the service differential for permanent impairment compensation.
Currently, injuries sustained during peacetime service receive lower compensation – a policy that disproportionately affects veterans who experience military sexual violence, most of whom are women.
RSL Victoria urges the Government to reconsider and ensure fair compensation for all veterans, regardless of when their injuries occurred.
