Raised, seen, and remembered: how flags keep our national story visible and alive

Flagworld has been a proud partner of RSL Victoria’s ANZAC Appeal for more than 20 years. In the lead-up to ANZAC Day 2025, Flagworld is exploring the history and symbolism of flags in ANZAC commemoration, as part of its ongoing support for the Appeal.
In the quiet moments before dawn on ANZAC Day, Australians gather across the country at memorials, community halls, RSLs, and driveways. We pause, we reflect, and we remember.
Among the soft murmurs of the crowd and the first notes of the bugle, a familiar symbol is often already in place: a flag, flying gently in the early morning light.
A flag is more than a decoration, more than a piece of fabric. For many, it’s a deeply personal act of remembrance; a tribute to someone they knew, or someone they never met, who served their country with courage and honour.
Australian manufacturer Flagworld understands the power of a flag. For over 60 years, Flagworld has been a trusted craftsman of our national symbol, proudly providing quality Australian-made flags for our Defence Force, RSL branches, government offices, councils, schools, businesses, and homes across the country.
Now, Flagworld has developed a range of Lest We Forget commemorative flags, created not only to mark ANZAC Day, but to carry stories, memories, and meaning.
These flags feature iconic imagery: a lone soldier silhouetted at sunset, fields of poppies, servicemen and women, and the animals who served beside them. For some, these images bring to mind a grandfather who fought in Tobruk. For others, a friend they served alongside in Afghanistan. For many, it’s about honouring all who’ve worn the uniform for Australia.
But these flags are more than symbolic. With every commemorative flag sold, 10% of proceeds is donated to the ANZAC Appeal, helping the RSL provide essential support for veterans and their families.
It’s a powerful gesture that turns personal remembrance into meaningful community impact.
Why a Flag Matters
A flag is raised, seen, and remembered.
It flies in front yards and classrooms. It’s carried in marches and folded with care after dawn services. It starts conversations between generations and quietly reminds passers-by that someone here remembers, and cares.
It becomes a way to mark the calendar not just with a date, but with an action.
When you choose a commemorative flag, you’re not only contributing to the work we do here at RSL Victoria, you’re also helping keep our traditions, our gratitude, and our national story visible and alive.
Honouring the Past. Supporting the Future.
Funds raised through the ANZAC Appeal help deliver critical services to veterans across Australia, from mental health support and financial welfare to employment assistance and social connection. Programs like RSL Active ensure that veterans of all ages have a place to belong and a reason to keep moving forward.
So, when a flag is raised in your garden, your school, or your community this ANZAC Day, it’s doing more than catching the wind.
It’s carrying stories. It’s carrying support. It’s carrying hope.
Because remembrance isn’t just about looking back: it’s about honouring those who served by supporting them today.

RSL Victoria
First established in 1916, RSL Victoria’s primary objectives are to provide support to veterans and their families, acknowledge Australian Defence Force service and perpetuate its patriotic duty whilst encouraging conversation and mateship between those who have served and their communities. A crucial role of the RSL is also to appropriately commemorate those who have suffered and died in service of our nation or its allies.
